Guide for Metacognitive Listening in the Classroom

A. Write down five main ideas that you think will be
mentioned in the text:

B. Discuss your prediction with a partner and then write down at least two more ideas that your partner included in his/her list of predictions and that you consider logical possibilities:

C. Listen (first listening) to the text. Place a check mark beside the ideas that you (A) and your partner (B) predicted and that were in fact mentioned in the texted.
And write down any other ideas that you had not predicted but were mentioned.

D. After verifying your predictions and discussing your listening results with your partner, listen (second listening) to the text again to check your results and to resolve any discrepancies in comprehension between you and your partner. Add any further points and important details that you may not have understood during the first listen:

E. Listen to the text a third time to verify comprehension after a class discussion of the content of the text or a reading of the text transcript. Try to apply a “Critical Listening” when you listen by thinking of what, why, how, when and where?

I prayed.. until the candles melted
صليت.. حتى ذابت الشموع
I knelt down ..until the kneeling get bored from me
ركعت.. حتى ملّني الركوع
I asked (around you) about Muhammad and  about Jesus
سألت عن محمد، فيكِ وعن يسوع
 Hey  Jerusalem, Hey  city that  emitting smell of  messengers
يا قُدسُ، يا مدينة تفوح أنبياء
Hey The  shortest path between earth and sky
يا أقصر الدروبِ بين الأرضِ والسماء
 Hey  Jerusalem, the minaret of religions
يا قدسُ، يا منارةَ الشرائع
( Hey Jerusalem ), the pretty infant girl with burning fingers
يا طفلةً جميلةً محروقةَ الأصابع
Sorrowfully  in your eyes, Hey  maiden’s city
حزينةٌ عيناكِ، يا مدينةَ البتول
 Hey  shadowy oasis that messenger passed through
يا واحةً ظليلةً مرَّ بها الرسول
stones of the streets are sorrowful
حزينةٌ حجارةُ الشوارع
minarets of mosques are depressed
حزينةٌ مآذنُ الجوامع
Hey Jerusalem, the beauty that coiling with/in   blackness
يا قُدس، يا جميلةً تلتفُّ بالسواد
who will bang the bells of church of Resurrection? On the Sundays’  mornings
من يقرعُ الأجراسَ في كنيسةِ القيامة؟ صبيحةَ الآحاد
Who will carry the toys (games) to the children? On  Xmas’ night
من يحملُ الألعابَ للأولاد؟ في ليلةِ الميلاد

Hey Jerusalem , aggrieved city
يا قدسُ، يا مدينةَ الأحزان
Hey  massive tear that rambling/roving  in eyelid
يا دمعةً كبيرةً تجولُ في الأجفان
 Hey the pearl of religious,  who will stop the aggression towards you?
من يوقفُ العدوان عليكِ، يا لؤلؤةَ الأديان ؟

who will wash the blood from the stones of the walls
من يغسل الدماءَ عن حجارةِ الجدران؟
Who will salvage the bible?
من ينقذُ الإنجيل؟
Who will rescue  the holy Quran ?
من ينقذُ القرآن؟
Who will save Jesus from those whom killed Messiah ?
من ينقذُ المسيحَ ممن قتلوا المسيح؟
who will save the human?
من ينقذُ الإنسان؟
Hey Jerusalem.. Hey my city
يا قدسُ.. يا مدينتي
Hey Jerusalem ... Hey my sweet heart /beloved
يا قدسُ.. يا حبيبتي
tomorrow..tomorrow.. the lemon will bloom
غداً.. غداً.. سيزهر الليمون
and the verdant spikes and olives will be happy
وتفرحُ السنابلُ الخضراءُ والزيتون
and the eyes will laugh
وتضحكُ العيون
and the emigrant doves will be return to the innocent roofs
وترجعُ الحمائمُ المهاجرة إلى السقوفِ الطاهرة
and the children will return to play
ويرجعُ الأطفالُ يلعبون
and the parents and their descendants will meet (each other)
 on your bloom mound
ويلتقي الآباءُ والبنون
 على رباك الزاهرة
Hey my country
يا بلدي
Hey  (my) country of peace and evergreen tree.
يا بلد السلام والزيتون
